The battery passport comes with a fixed date

From 18 February 2027, industrial batteries above 2 kWh, EV traction batteries and LMT batteries (e.g. e-bike packs) need a digital battery passport — per unit. Passenta turns this into a plannable process.

Mandatory from 18.02.2027

The EU Battery Regulation sets the date: 18 February 2027. Affected is whoever places such batteries on the EU market — including importers and bicycle manufacturers with purchased packs. The passport applies per unit, reachable via a QR code on the battery. Parts of the due-diligence duties were postponed to 2027 by the omnibus regulation; the passport date remained unchanged.

What the industry is dealing with

Units instead of models

The battery passport applies per unit with serial number — one data sheet becomes thousands of passports with state and lifecycle data. That breaks Excel.

Supplier data from Asia

Cell chemistry, carbon footprint, recycled content: the core data sits with the cell manufacturer — who rarely sits in the EU and rarely answers in German.

Responsibility with the placer on the market

Even those who only buy and install packs, or import them, carry the passport duty. Many affected companies don't know yet — the deadline applies anyway.

Which batteries need a passport from 2027?

I only install packs I purchase — does this affect me?

Yes, in many constellations. Whoever places the battery on the EU market — including importers or own-brand sellers — is responsible. Clarify your role early; Passenta then structures the data collection from the cell manufacturer.

What about the EU registry?

Passports will have to be registered in the central EU registry; the registry launches in stages. Passenta already creates identifiers in the prescribed format and tracks the registration state per unit.

Isn't a PDF data sheet enough?

No. The battery passport is a machine-readable data set retrievable per unit with prescribed content and QR access — a PDF fulfils neither structure nor accessibility.
